John Buford, obviously. I also like George Thomas, Kearny, Sherman and George Custer, among others. I agree that Thomas was a workhorse that was overshadowed by his old buddies. Great Northern General though, and a Virginian no less.

In the South, I'd say I find Lee and Pickett tragic. I like Jackson's philosophy, and of course I like Stuart.

This is a tough question though. I mean, I forgot Chamberlain, Felix Zollecoffer, and Longstreet. To get a shorter list, perhaps the question should be, who didn't we like? There's a lot of personality in the Civil War. I'm a reenactor myself, a yankee. The more commanders I learn about, famous or obscure, the more I would have to add to a list of favorites.

i must say General John F. Reynolds commander of the 1st corps at Gettysburg, the 1st corps were the elite of the Army Of The Potomac and he was offered the title of commanding general instead of Meade, But he refused.

I would have to say Robert E Lee

Grant really turned things around for the Union, but he never really had the respect that Lee received.
