NTW3 7.5 - Recommendations & Player Issues

Postby Lord Cosak » Mon Oct 02, 2017 3:01 pm

Here are recommendations from the modding team for a better experience on NTW3, about technical issues and historical considerations.

Stability
NTW3' main curse, and the main cause is NTW (vanilla) was designed for short 1v1 or 2v2 battles. Avoid the following to improve stability:
  • Don't ever use alt-tab, even in the lobby: this undoubftully increases instability a lot
  • Don't use the Steam overlay, especially the Steam chat: while you are typing the NTW network bandwidth it greatly reduced

If you need to check your emails or do something else while in NTW, please configure NTW in windowed mode. I am personally using it for years. If you don't like how it looks, you can use "Borderless gaming": http://store.steampowered.com/app/388080/Borderless_Gaming/

2v2 or 3v3 are also more stable than 4v4, for obvious statistical reasons.

Steam issues
NTW network code is crap: if you lose your connection to Steam for 1/10th of a second, it's over, unlike in many other games. Basically it's due to an anti-cheat procedure developped by CA (data checksum between players constantly sent to Steam servers). The only way to get rid of this is to play with local virtual network, like Hamachi.

Historical accuracy
Multiplayer battles in NTW3 have no rules. But are official suggestions and statements for NTW3 MP players:
  • The oldest habit on NTW3, even NTW2: don't select France and United Kingdom in the same team
  • Try not to mix factions from different alliances (France/allies on one side, coalition on the other): France has rich enough rosters to be played the way you want (numbers, elite, defense, attack, rush), and it's not worth having a mod so careful with historical details if nonsensical alliances are selected all the time.
    Image
  • A long and heated debate: generals. The rule is clear: there is no rule: you can do anything with your general, and to the enemies' generals. I have heard countless times about a so-called "gentleman rule" to spare enemy generals. If that indeed existed in previous wars, it was certainly not the case in the Napoleonic Wars. Hundreds of generals were killed, they were priority targets. If you don't protect your general, don't complain it has been killed.
  • Embedded artillery: don't put a infantry over your artillery crew, with just the tip of the guns out in front of it. Leave your gun crew alone.
    This is okay:

    But this is not:

HighQualitySoup wrote:I don't know really what to do with the crash log because when I open it with notepad it is just hexadecimal

But anyways I installed 7.5 on a fresh vanilla reinstall (deleted the folder and then uninstalled the game through steam to make sure there are no mod files) as well as a cleaned cache. The order I installed the mod was by running the NTW3-7.5-setup.1.exe, then NTW3-7.5-maps.exe, and finally the NTW3-7.5-addon.exe. For each .exe I made the path "steam/steamapps/common" and for the setup and map file I got a popup saying that the folder Napoleon Total War already exists, so I clicked install there anyway.

The launcher works fine so I start up the 1805 campaign and everything works normally. There is sound when the Sega logo comes up but when the title screen comes on there is no music playing. I go in to the options edit the graphics and click on Campaigns of the Coalition. The mouse courser turns into a stopwatch, swings around for a bit, and I get a Napoleon Total War stopped responding prompt. I thought it was just having an error loading but it the pop-up appeared again and the game closed. Tried to do it a second time and the same thing happened again. I went to verify the game cache through steam and it said that 5 files failed to validate.

Thinking my problems were solved I went to restart the game again and again it crashed upon clicking Campaigns of the Coalition. I looked in the Napoleon total war folder and didn't find a duplicate Napoleon folder or anything that looked out of place. I validated the files again and this time it only found one file. This still made the audio not play during the title screen and the game crashed on clicking campaigns of the coalition. I'm going to try and reinstall the game and hope it works but if there is anyway you can solve this problem please tell me. Also after browsing the ModDB comments everyone seems to have this problem.

Also I just made this account just to ask for a solution so if this is not the correct place to put this please tell me the correct location.
I should also note that the classic battles still works

I don't notice anything out of place so looks like I am the 5%

But I should also mention that it is only when I click on campaigns of the coalitions is when the game crashes (I can play battles fine)

 Napoleon Total War game files can be installed in any directory.
95% of the installation issues for the NTW3v75 mod are due to a wrong directory given during the installation.
.....1) Locate your Napoleon.exe file
.....2) From here you must have /data/NTW3/Launcher 7.5 (directory)

Make sure the NTW3 folder is installed properly in the data folder as shown below.
Check the spc_user.script file to read as shown that it's loading the correct NTW3 Campaign files.

Lord Davn, I do not have the "audio" and the "bearer" folders in my "Napoleon Total War" directory. Otherwise, yes, I had to fix the script. Naval pack was all the way down. Even though it resembles your photo, I still crash upon clicking "Campaigns of the Coalition". Any idea?

Lord Davn wrote:The audio & bearer folders are part of the original ntw vanilla files, you should do a clean install and play a few short vanilla battles & 1805 campaign to verify that it's working correctly

Alright, so checking around, I found out that I do not have the "naval.pack" in the ... Data/NTW3/Campaigns/ Packs
Now if the packs are for spcn, then I should find the naval pack over here as well because I downloaded the setup file which invludes the campaign.

I have NOT downloaded the optional file. Because it was OPTIONAL. Maybe you might have misplaced a file or something?
How else can I not have a pack that's supposed to be there? I will download and let you know.

Well it seems every time I validate the game cache it says 5 files failed to validate. No idea what the problem is at this point considering all the right files are in the right place.

The naval.pack (183 mb) was NOT included in the Setup file (MP battles + Campaign A files)

It's still not working for some reason. Still crashes at Campaigns of the Coalition.
Maybe an installation vid for this version will do the trick?

Excuse me Lord davn, but the naval pack in the optional file is 173 MB or something. NOT 183 MB.
Uhhh... Not sure what's that about. :indifferent:
Also, I uninstalled the NTW3 mod and played Vanilla. Worked perfectly fine WITHOUT the audio and the bearer files. The only reason I haven't completely uninstalled the game is because I have a really slow net where I am at the moment. So, if I can play the vanilla game without those files (I have NEVER seen those files. Up until the day before yesterday, i was playing SPCN V7.2 without a single problems and I did not have those files.) might it be that the problem is that the naval pack in the optional isn't the file we need?
I'm sorry if I'm being annoying, but I honestly woulz've uninstalled the game had I known that I'd be able tk download it in a day or two.

Lord Davn wrote:Please read the notes that I've posted here, YOU NEED the Optional file with the new naval.pack (183 mb). Your 173 mb naval.pack is an older file which likely does NOT contain the new (Danish & Swedish) ships that Lord Wesley has added to the v75 campaign.

The naval.pack (183 mb) was NOT included in the Setup file (MP battles + Campaign A files)

We should have a patch file out soon for the v75 SP Campaign.
The SPC files will be consolidated for easier download & installation to help clear up these issues.

I really appreciate you are taking your time helping me and everyone in fixing their problems, but I know for an absolute fact that my installation path is correct and that I have all the files. I personally think this is a either compatibility issue or something wrong with my computer.

The Campaign doesn't work for a lot of people, and Lordz are trying their best to put out a fix. Lordz aren't a company with thousands of employees, so it will take a while, but it will come, don't worry....

I'm not worried. I'm just making sure they see the problem is general. I'm glad of the work they are doing, and kept on that positive attitude all along. Please don't put additional comments like your ending one when you have no clue who you are talking to, and in an inappropriate context.
Thanks
