Real Corpo de Engenheiros founded at the year of 1647 under the name of Corpo de Obreiros Sapadores changing is name to Real Corpo de Engenheiros on 1793. That become to be known as,Batalhão de Artífices Engenheiros, formed by companies of Sapadores and Pontoneiros of the 4 existing Regimentos de Artilharia, at the year of 1812 that is today ,in active as Regimento de Engenharia nº1.
The companies of Sappers and Pioneers were already part ,as i just mention, of the Regimentos de Artilharia.
For the more skeptics and to share with you all once more ,that the construction of the Linha de Torres Vedras only become possible due the high quality of the Portuguese engineers and not due the British forces.
Also ,after joining the Legiao Portuguesa they have become on of the best units on the French army in the construction field.
Academia Real de Fortificação, Artilharia e Desenho ,founded on day 2 of January of 1790 by Queen D. Maria I .

The Guarda Real da Policia was known also during a short period as Corpo de Voluntários Reais de Milícias.

The Guarda Real da Polícia was established in 1801 by Prince Regent John, a proposal from the Quartermaster-General of Police of the Court and the United Pina Manique, following the model of the French Gendarmerie, which had been established in 1791. In note that, as in 1793, the Intendant Pina Manique had organized on a trial basis, a military police company, GRP's predecessor. Following the GRP of Lisbon, were created the Royal Guard of the Port Police and the Royal Guard of the Police of Rio de Janeiro, the latter being the source of the current State Military Police of Rio de Janeiro Military Police and the Federal District, in Brazil.

According to the regulation Guard should be "formed by the best soldiers, chosen throughout the Army, not only among the most robust, secure, single and 30 years old ... but also good morigeração and conduct ', because "His Majesty wants the GRP Corps, is a National Force, which hold the internal tranquility of capital ', and its members should" consider his admission in this body as a principle of compensation that His Majesty gives prior service . »

It was therefore considered an elite body.

The Guard was conducting its police functions of Lisbon area with competence and good results. In late 1807, with the departure of the royal family and the court to Brazil, due to the first French invasion, remained in service has not shipped. The orders received was to receive the French general Junot, accompanying him from Sacavém to Lisbon.

His duties remained the same during the French occupation of the city, and their commander, French aristocrat emigrated, worked actively with the invading army, and even named "Governor of Lisbon Weapons". This active collaboration Novion made it the only official French emigre, who has entered the service of Portugal on the staff of the Marquis de Larosière, to leave Portugal with the army of Junot in next September.

Some officers and soldiers of the Guard were accused of collaboration have been dismissed from the body, but without further consequences. There were others who have managed to leave the capital and be incorporated in the Portuguese army Bernardim Freire de Andrade, were present at the combat of Roliça and the Battle of Vimeiro (see contemporary relationship published in the journal of Coimbra Minerva Lusitanian).

Forty-one soldiers of the Guard, commanded by Captain of the 1st Squadron, Elizario de Carvalho, participated in the Battle of Vimeiro, and its commander died during loading of the British and Portuguese cavalry, which occurred at the end of the battle. Also 2 company of foot soldiers participaded during the going of the war.

With the end of the French occupation, the Guard has resumed its normal activities and was appointed its commander with the rank of colonel, Major Cavalry Regiment n 9 Chaves, Filipe de Sousa Canavarro.

The Mecklenburg Cavalry Regiment was created by decree of June 26, 1762 for which the Head of the Duke Carlos Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
Changed its name to Cavalry Regiment nº 4 by the decree of May 19, 1806.
On December 22, 1807 was licensed in order of Junot, integrating the 1st Cavalry Regiment of the future Portuguese Legion, commanded by Colonel Roberto Ignatius Ferreira de Aguiar.
It was restored by Order of September 30, 1808.
The Regiment recruited in Alenquer, Aldeia-Galega da Merceana, Óbidos, Caldas da Rainha, Salir do Porto, Chamusca e Ulme.
It is probably certain that this Regiment consisted in Hussardos, with Mecklemburg uniforms and training.I have not found any pictures of this Regiment on Napoleonic Wars.
Caldas da Rainha is where i live.

Some participations on the Peninsula Wars.
