NTW3 Guide - Graphic & Performance Optimisation

Postby Lord Liberalis » Wed Jun 11, 2014 3:11 pm

First thing to define is the amount of memory allocated to the game engine as a function of the amount available on your graphics card.

Chapter 1 - Setting Memory

First you have to enable the view of hidden folders in your folder options in Explorer.
Here's how to display hidden files and folders.

  • Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button Image, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.

  • Click the View tab.

  • Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files, folders, and drives, and then click OK.

Then go here:

C: \ Users \ Your PC Username \ AppData \ Roaming \ The Creative Assembly \ Napoleon \ scripts

Open the file preferences.script.txt
Go to line:
gfx_video_memory 0; # Gfx_video_memory, Override available video memory (bytes) #

Replace 0 by the amount of available memory on your graphics card

There I can't help you, you need to find this information on your own. In the control panel of your graphics card (Geforce or catalyst) or on the box of the graphics card or with AIDA64 software type, etc. ...

Depending on your card, here are the numbers to enter:

2GB = 2147483648
1GB = 1073741824
768MB = 805306368
512MB = 536870912
256MB = 268435456
128MB = 134217728

:exclaim: ATTENTION! Be sure of your choice, it risks nothing but the game will crash if a wrong value is inserted.

Chapter 2 - Setting Graphic Options

Here are the basic and versatile settings for those who have notsogreat pc's. :biggrin:

  • Shaders:
    Action - Refining and number plating textures and pixel accuracy
    Settings = 3 (low) or 2
  • Anti-Aliasing:
    Action - Effects anti-staircase borders on textures
    Settings = 2x Maximum or turned Off
  • Anisotropic filtering:
    Action - Filtering textures and finer rendering
    Settings = 8x Aniso or Trilinear
  • Texture Quality:
    Action - Plating textures on the model (this is the parameter that changes most visual quality)
    Settings = Try to leave it at least on High, if not, then on Medium
  • Particle Effects Quality:
    Action - Detailed particles in explosions, musket flash effects etc. ..
    Settings = High or Medium (you can turn this to Low on a slower rig)
  • Unit Details Quality:
    Action - Degraded Visual Effect on Low (Corpses disappear on the battlefield if set to Medium or Low)
    Settings = High
  • Building Detail:
    Action - No comment, it's all in the title
    Settings = Medium or Low
  • Shadows Detail:
    Action - General Shadows, useless and very greedy in resources - small rigs refrain
    Settings = Off
  • Tree Detail:
    Action - Display quality trees, useless and very greedy
    Settings = Medium or Low
  • Grass Detail:
    Action - Quality ambient vegetation, useless and very greedy - small config refrain
    Settings = Low or Off
  • Water Detail:
    Action - Display quality water, useless and very greedy
    Settings = Medium or Low
  • Sky Detail:
    Action - Display quality of the sky, useless and very greedy
    Settings = Medium or Low
  • IGD:
    Action - Effects gloss & brightness. gives a pleasant visual comfort
    Setting = On
  • Volumetric effects:
    Action - Renders smoke
    Settings = On (Off on low rigs)
  • SSAO:
    Action - Delivers the most accurate, detailed shadows. Useless and very greedy - small rigs refrain from turning this on !
    Settings = Off
  • Vertical Sync:
    Action - synchronizes the per-second-image-refresh-rate of your graphics card with that of your screen.
    Setting = Activate if your display is hashed during game (lines going up and down the screen)
  • Shadows of equipment:
    Action - This option puts shadows on all equipment; guns, weapons etc ... needless and very demanding - small rigs refrain.
    Settings = Off
  • Distorting:
    Action - Heat distortion effect, perspective of reflecting particles suspended in the air, the effects of heat waves, etc. ... Nice but too greedy.
    Settings = Better Off
  • Depth of field:
    Action - Maintains a better display quality textures despite the distance... Really nice but greedy.
    Settings = Better Off

3rd Chapter - Drivers and PC cleaning

Do not hesitate to update your graphic card drivers if you experience any performance issues.

Also, consider that it is quite a healthy habit to clean your Hard Drive and Defragmenting it at least once a month.

Your game should be boosted now. It did splendours on one of my older rigs from 2008.

Thanks to L'Aigle (modder on Masters of Europe for having teached me these configs.)

The best things players can do is to optimize their PC from the ground-up.

Installing a proper push-pull fan config in your rig, ideally controlled by a fan controller. A side-fan putting fresh air onto your GPU is highly advisable, if your chassis allows it. Dust out your PC twice a year.

BIOS optimization

Motherboard tools; install them and tune the power settings of your motherboard.
Use Windows power profiles. They work by parking/unparking your CPU cores.

Tune your router settings i.e disable firewall and all other security features

Windows optimization...
-uninstall all AV/firewall and install adblock pro in your browser and learn not to be a moron
-disable uneeded services
-disable uneeded features
-disable UAC
-disable system restore
-update all drivers
-ensure chipset driver is installed
-uninstall all unnecesary programs software
-optimzie startup entires
-adwcleaner, ccleaner, defraggler, hitmanpro, ect

SSD optimization (if applicable) disable prefetch, superfectch, indexing, defrag schedule, ect

Then optimize your nvidia/ATI settings, and nvidia inspector if your nvidia

Then optimize NTW III in-game graphics settings to run smooth in the worst-case scenario which would be a 4v4 at huge unit sizes, then step-down from that benchmark.

I highly recommend everyone follow this advice. My ASUS gaming laptop is now sitting in the repair shop because it overheated due to a build of dust that reduced the cooling circulation :rolleyes:

Yep as a PC technitian I'm constantly clearing dust from the narrow heatsink grills that builds-up into a matt of fluff, completely blocking the airflow of the fan. Deadly!
Don't worry about warranty, no laptop will go wrong in the measly one year warranty, so just strip it down and blow it out.

If your lucky your laptops fan/heatsink will be accessable via a plastic cover, like the RAM/hard drive slots. Most laptops need a full strip, though :rolleyes:

It may also help to have a cooling pad under your laptop during extended gameplay. The graphics card can throw off a lot of heat with some of the large battles :angry:

Greetings!

First of, let me say this is an amazing mod. Unfrotunately, i'm getting crashes when playing with a huge amount of units, and i'm wondering if i'm not optimising my computer and gpu to play the mod.

I've just bought the 1080ti geforce grahpic card so i'm hoping to get the max out of it. In the post above it's mentioned what to write in the spaces in the files, but it's only up to 2gb of vram, while i have 11 now. What number should i put in? Does it even affect the game when you actually have a good video card? Or is all this advice just how to get the weaker cards working for the mod?

Thanks for the help!

The NTW3 mods have been designed and optimized to play with MEDIUM unit sizes. It will handle large and ultra size units but you may experience more crashes especially with higher graphic settings.

The European campaign is the War of the Third Coalition and starts in September 1805, so the 1799 units would not be realistic in uniform or stats. However they would be applicable to Napoleons Egyptian campaign that started in July 1798.

Sry, Lord Davn, it's possible to choose or add units? As for my play it's not an idea to be lifelike. It's just a very large enjoyment to see the fine - many - different units. Can you help? Thanks. Kind regards

It's a BIG job to change out all of units in the campaign startpos.esf file.
Just completed doing it for our NTW3 Classic Battle peninsula campaign :rolleyes:

Hello!

I would try the job - p.e. one of MP-unit to infix the 1805 main campaign. Would you like explain the job (screenshots, where I can find the right files)? It's correct to use "schema" or "EditSF"? :eek: :cool:
Kind regards

First you’ll have to setup separate uniform & graphic files for the 1805 Campaign. The existing ones for the Classic Battles are too large and cause the campaign battles to crash. Then edit out unused units from the large CB data tables.
Now comes the fun part of editing the startops.esf and scripting.lua files. Very tedious and unforgiving work.
