Well, here's hoping the 5.1 patch, then, will include these campaign improvements. That should solve it. Are historical battles only played with medium unit size (due to performance issues)?

Remember that a lot of us are playing NTWIII campaign as a multiplayer experience - it is the foremost mod in my mind for that purpose. Don't dismiss it as only beating the moronic AI - that's only for training. Perhaps the number of guns per unit simply needs to be increased if the scaling does not...

It's very possible, again, that if slots are not limited, and in a matchmade battle, only the purchase cost is considered (whereas in the campaign it's the upkeep cost which matters, the purchase cost is trivial in the larger scheme of things)

The main thing seems to be damage - many soldiers fall down from a hit from round shot, 90% of them pick themselves up.

Yes you are probably doing something wrong. Canister is only for short range not long . Obviously I know that. This is based on simple observation of the battlefield worth of the arty. Maybe it's useful to have as a supporting arm with this scaling - however, in game terms, it's not worth the upkee...
